New Event… Coin Drive

Volunteering

So we’ve been thinking… we really want to do a coin drive, but with a purpose. Something tangible we can move towards so we know where the coins we are donating are going. Plus we want to restrict it to a charity in Hawaii and ideally do another sort of adoption. We looked at adopting a reef, but that ended up being something in the realm of $10k +. Then…

Waimea Valley Volunteer Day & Shoe Drive Wrap Up

Volunteering

On our Waimea day, Rosie was the first to arrive and spent 30 minutes wandering about and seeing peacocks walking all over like they owned the place and roosting in crazy high trees. The rest of HIC then started to arrive and Hoku, our volunteer organizer, came out to greet us. We didn’t find out till later in the day that it was actually supposed to be his day off,…

Beach Cleanup Complete

February Events: Beach Cleanup & Continued Shoe Recycling

Volunteering

February will consist of a beach cleanup day at Bellows in cooperation with the Oahu Surfrider Foundation and Sustainable Coastlines. An event has been set up in Zimbra, please reply if you can come. This won’t be an HIC only event, it is open to the public but we can still sport our shirts proudly!

Also, we’ll be continuing our shoe recycling through the end of February. A reminder on…

Adopt a Family 2011

Volunteering

For Christmas this year, eleven of us adopted a family to make their holiday season special through Helping Hands Hawaii.

On December 19th, Rosie dropped off all of the goodies collected by our fantastic team at the Helping Hands warehouse. Everything barely fit in her jeep and she was greeted with copious amounts of hugging and effusive thank you’s upon dropoff! They needed to bring out 3 carts just to…

Trail Clearing w/ DLNR at Kaena Point

Volunteering

In June, HIC and DLNR worked together to clear a new trail at Kaena Point. We created a new short footpath to prevent erosion in a location highly known for people going off trail. We worked with our partner, Aaron, who leads the Na Ala Hele Trails Program for DLNR. The work was done in collaboration with various members of the Hawaii Ultra Running Team (H.U.R.T.) and DLNR staff.
