International Coastal Cleanup Day in Kahuku

On Saturday 21st, Jamie, Steve and Rosie participated in a beach cleanup hosted by Plastic Free Hawaii, a program of the Kōkua Hawaii Foundation. Over 150 volunteers removed 4,329 lbs of marine debris from James Campbell Wildlife Refuge in Kahuku with over 2,000 lbs of that being from derelict fishing nets. 1,600 lbs was sorted and will be recycled by Parley.

Join us for the Making Strides for Breast Cancer Walk on October 26, 2019

Volunteering

On October 26th, we’ll be participating in our fourth American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk at Keehi Lagoon Beach Park in Honolulu.

This walks raise awareness and funds to save lives from breast cancer. From the opening ceremony to the post-walk entertainment, this event is a celebration of survivors and opportunity to remember loved-ones lost. It’s a day that shouldn’t be missed and won’t be forgotten.

Delivering Meals on Wheels with Biki

Volunteering

Biki is the name of the bikeshare program in Honolulu. Earlier this year, we partnered with them to offer a special employer plan to our staff that paid for unlimited free rides. In our dense urban area, these bikes make getting around a breeze.

Loko Ea Fishpond Workday

Volunteering

For our main volunteer event in July we headed up to the North Shore to spend the morning working at the Loko Ea fishpond. From rock wall building to invasive grass removal, they hold community work days every third Saturday to continue the restoration of the 400 year old fishpond. Work began on the project in 2013 and has been ongoing since to bring the Loko ea back to life…

TOWN Cleanup with Sustainable Coastlines

On Saturday, three of our staff – Brad, Jamie and Rosie, headed to Magic Island Beach Park to take part in Sustainable Coastlines’ Town cleanup. The goal was to clean a large area of the South Shore of Oahu along the coast, beach park, harbor and Ala Wai canal. This area of Oahu is where trash that is left behind or escapes our waste stream ends up in the ocean….

Adopt a Family 2018

For our fourth year, HIC adopted families for the holidays. Adopt A Family is a seasonal program administered by Helping Hands Hawaii that links individuals and families in need with donors in the community. Participants are referred to the program through their large network of community partners, and donors participate by adopting a family and fulfilling their holiday wish lists.

MLK Day Beach Cleanup in Kahuku

Volunteering

A staggering 500 people came out to the James Campbell National Wildlife Refuge in Kahuku for the Martin Luther King Day Beach Cleanup organized by the Kokua Hawaii Foundation. Over 6,050 lbs of trash and debris were removed from the beach – 1,450 lbs of which was recycled with the Parley for the Oceans project.
