Hawaii DLNR Launches Online Permitting for Commercial Vessels Landing at Mokulua and Popoia

The Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) Division of Forestry and Wildlife (DOFAW) has launched an online permitting site for vendors to register and purchase commercial vessel landing (such as kayak tours) permits to DLNR’s offshore island wildlife sanctuaries. The service provides valuable access and protects the natural beauty of the two offshore island wildlife sanctuaries. Permits are required by law to land any business-oriented vessel at the regulated sanctuaries. This online service will initially allow purchase of landing permits at two windward Oahu offshore island sanctuaries, the islets of Mokulua and Popoia.

“The new permitting site provides better access to our services for commercial vendors, and helps us monitor the number of landings a day, to protect the natural beauty of Hawaii’s wildlife sanctuaries for future generations,” said DOFAW Administrator Lisa Hadway. “We hope by automating the permitting process, we will better serve our vendors and encourage them to comply with DLNR regulations by making it easier to report and purchase landings. It is also a way for the public to get information about the program and see where the money goes in preserving Hawaii’s lands.”

Commercial vessel vendors can visit dofaw.eHawaii.gov/permitting to register for an online account. Upon approval, applicants will be notified by email to include permission to access the permitting system at any time.

The online commercial vessel-permitting site is created in partnership with Hawaii Information Consortium, LLC, the official Internet portal manager of eHawaii.gov.
