Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources Wins National Award

The Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) was recently recognized by the Center for Digital Government for its effort in maintaining sustainable fisheries with an electronic fishing trip reporting system. The Commercial Marine License Fishing Trip Report System (CMLSFR) is a winner of the 2013 Digital Government Achievement Award in the Government-to-Business category.

“We are very excited to receive this honor,” said William Aila, Jr., director of DLNR. “It’s everyone’s responsibility to ensure our future generations will be able to continue to enjoy the natural beauty and resources we currently have in the State. A sustainable fishery is an integral part of securing the future business and livelihood of Hawaii’s fishermen.”

The CMLSFR modernizes the existing paper-based data collection process. Online reporting eliminates the need for the Hawaii Division of Aquatic Resources (DAR) to order and mail reporting form booklets to each individual licensee. In addition, the online system reduces the lag time between fishing activities and reporting, improves the availability of data for better assessment of fishery resources, and helps sustain and maintain the fisheries for future generations.

The Digital Government Achievement Awards program recognizes outstanding agency and department websites, and applications that enhance information interactions, transactions and/or services, and increase innovation, efficiency, and performance. The award categories include government-to-government, government-to-business, government-to-citizen, and government internal.

The CMLSFR was created through a partnership with the Division of Aquatic Resources of the Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources and Hawaii Information Consortium, the State portal manager of eHawaii.gov.
